Baby and Infant Care
For many parents, one of the biggest early challenges is sleep. Babies have unique sleep needs that can be unpredictable and exhausting. If you’re struggling to get your baby to sleep through the night (or even for a few hours at a time), you’re not alone. Here are some reasons why your baby is not sleeping.
1. Understanding Baby Sleep Cycles
Unlike adults, babies have shorter sleep cycles that often range from 40 to 60 minutes. Babies go through stages of light and deep sleep more quickly, which means they’re more likely to wake up. This is normal and expected, especially for newborns, but it can be challenging when you’re up multiple times each night.
Recognize that frequent wake-ups are a natural part of your baby’s early development. As they grow, their sleep cycles will lengthen, making it easier for them to stay asleep for longer periods.
2. Growth Spurts and Developmental Milestones
During growth spurts, babies often wake up more frequently due to increased hunger. Additionally, developmental milestones—such as learning to crawl, sit up, or talk—can lead to changes in sleep patterns. These spurts usually last a few days to a week and are a normal part of growth.
What you can try: If you notice your baby is waking more frequently and seems hungrier, try offering more milk or formula during the day to help them feel full at night. Be patient and know that these phases will pass.
3. Separation Anxiety
Around 6 to 9 months, many babies experience separation anxiety, which can cause more night wakings as they become more aware that you’re not around. They may call for you in the middle of the night, wanting comfort and reassurance.
What you can try: Practice short separations during the day to help your baby feel secure. At bedtime, consider a soothing, consistent bedtime routine and a soft, reassuring presence (like a calming voice or gentle lullaby) to ease their anxiety.
4. Overtiredness
Overtired babies can actually have a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep. If your baby is overstimulated or skipping naps, they may struggle with sleep at night. Recognizing sleep cues like rubbing eyes, yawning, or fussiness can help you prevent overtiredness.
What you can try: Try to establish a regular sleep schedule based on your baby’s age and natural sleep patterns. Nap routines can help babies get adequate rest during the day, making nighttime sleep easier.
5. Sleep Environment
Babies are sensitive to their environment, and small changes can have a big impact. Things like too much light, noise, or temperature can interfere with sleep.
What you can try: Aim for a dark, cool, and quiet sleep space. A white noise machine can help drown out background noises, while blackout curtains can create a dark and calming environment. Be sure the room is at a comfortable temperature—not too hot or cold.
6. Teething and Discomfort
Teething can disrupt sleep, as the discomfort may cause babies to wake up more frequently. Common signs of teething include drooling, biting, or rubbing their gums.
What you can try: If teething seems to be the cause, you can help soothe your baby with a cool teething ring or gentle gum massage before bed. Avoid pain relief methods that aren’t specifically recommended for young children, and consult your paediatrician for the safest options.
8. Consistency and Routine
Consistency is one of the most effective ways to help babies develop healthy sleep habits. A bedtime routine can signal to your baby that it’s time to wind down, making the transition to sleep smoother.
What you can try: Develop a consistent bedtime routine that includes relaxing activities like a bath, reading a story, or singing a lullaby. Stick to the same sequence every night to help your baby learn what to expect, which can make bedtime less of a struggle.
